Danse Quixotic Press Release

Willamette Apprentice Ballet is pleased to present Danse Quixotic, an evening of dance that features excerpts from the 19th century classical ballets, Don Quixote & Sylvia.

Company Director Megan Skinner is staging a suite of Spanish-themed group pieces and solo variations from the ballet Don Quixote, with choreography/staging inspired by the original 1869 (for the Bolshoi Ballet) and 1871 (for the St. Petersburg Ballet) choreography by Marius Petipa. Dancers from Willamette Apprentice Ballet and the Advanced Character Dance class from the Corvallis Academy of Ballet will perform classical ballet and character dance variations that are inspired by traditional Spanish dances such as the seguidilla, jota, and flamenco, utilizing traditional Spanish dance props such as fans and castanets. Megan Skinner has also choreographed for the program the well-known “Valse Lente” and “Pizzicato Polka” from the ballet Sylvia, music by Leo Delibes.

Resident Choreographer Matthew Averill will stage the “Dream Sequence” from the ballet, Don Quixote. In the ballet version of this famous tale, Don Quixote is knocked unconscious when he attacks what he believes to be a giant, but in reality is a windmill. He dreams that he is in an enchanted forest and that the Queen of the Dryads comes to him and praises him for his bravery and chivalry. Cupid also appears in his dream and presents him with a vision of Dulcinea, the Don’s ideal of feminine beauty, grace, and purity. The scene also features a corps de ballet of Dryads and a children’s corps de ballet of Cupids, danced by the Ballet III students from the Corvallis Academy of Ballet.

Three graduating seniors will be featured in solo variations throughout the performances. Eleanor Adams is a senior at Corvallis High School, and she plans to double-major in Chemistry/Pre-Medicine and International Business in the “Urban Honors College” at Portland State University; Hanna Kamikawa is a senior at Newport High School, and she plans to major in chemistry at the University of Oregon; and Linda Wang is a senior at Philomath High School- she is still finalizing her plans for next year.

Students from the Chinese Dance class at the Corvallis Academy of Ballet, also known as East West Dance, will perform a traditional Flower Drum Dance and a martial arts-inspired piece, staged by Mimi Chen. Also on the program will be a contemporary ballet piece performed by students from Legacy Ballet of Albany: Director, Heather Hill.

We hope that you will join us for an elegant, entertaining, and diverse evening of dance, and come out in support of a local, non-profit performing arts organization!

Willamette Apprentice Ballet presents Danse Quixotic: Friday, April 17th & Saturday, April 18th, 2015 @ 8pm both nights. Tickets are $15 (Adults), $10 (Children, Students, Seniors (60+)), and $5 (w/ Oregon Trail Card- Corvallis Arts for All Program). Tickets are on sale now, reserved seating, at The Glass Slipper in downtown Corvallis and Oregon Dancewear in downtown Albany.
